A higher twist shows the belt is loose, while a lesser twist means it’s too tight. The required measure of tension in a serpentine belt is it shouldn’t deflect over 0.5 inches when twisted either way from the middle. Remember that the serpentine belt envelops several pulleys while a timing belt connects only two. The timing belt is shorter than a serpentine belt. This belt plays a critical role in the combustion process of your vehicle.Ī timing belt is directly driven because it’s directly connected to the crankshaft pulley and turns the camshaft. The timing belt connects the crankshaft to the engine valves, which supply fuel and air. Its role is to rotate, turn, or drive all pulleys connected to it. The force it generates depends on the friction between the belt and pulley surfaces it runs. The belt powers many components, and they move because the belt does.įurther, the serpentine belt is friction-oriented or friction driven. There are several differences between a serpentine belt and a timing belt. Differences Between a Timing Belt and a Serpentine Belt Design improvements and a long lifespan are fueling the return of timing chains in many modern cars. Timing belts were introduced in the 1960s because they are quieter and lighter. Timing chains function the same as the belt, but they have metal instead of rubber. Depending on your vehicle model, you may have a timing chain instead of a timing belt. The timing belt is a rubber belt with hard teeth for interlocking with the crankshaft and camshaft cogwheels. The serpentine belts get their name from their appearance and how they weave themselves in and out of various accessories and pulleys with ease. The belt’s ribbed side is in contact with grooves on accessory drive pulleys, while the flat side is in contact with a tensioner roller. These ribs make it more flexible, which allows the belt to move and wrap around smaller accessories in the engine. You’re only as good as your last job! I’m sure Valspar will deny that it is anything to do with them, but I think they have over-promised when they say they can match any colour. There are serious problems with Valspar V700 Emulsion! Considering the finish, I’m afraid to say, I’m less than impressed. Especially for a paint which boasts to be made for professionals and demands a premium price. I appreciate this was always going to be a difficult colour to work with, but six coats and a base coat isn’t acceptable. This paint had no coverage at all and it showed a lot of imperfections such as flashing etc. I applied 6 coats, and I still wasn’t happy. The colour is close enough, but the actual paint had no body to it. Valspar boast a superior colour matching service, and all I did was ask them to match a Tikkurila colour for me. With the additional above loss, it’s going to stretch me. So far, I’ve shelled out on their paint, consumables and fuel, plus wasted two days, this takes me to the £400 quoted. I only quoted £400 for the job to start off with!! In fact, I’ve calculated my economic loss to rectify the issue will be about £430 new materials, fuel and consumables, plus additional labour. Producing wax is a function of the younger worker bees in their second and third weeks of age. With my three children grown and out on their own, I have no need or desire to invest more money into adding bedrooms and bathrooms to my house.įurther, if you’re going to feed, it takes a lot of feed to trigger the colony toward drawing out new comb. The colony may be satisfied with what they have, kind of like me. Merely feeding the colony sugar syrup may not be sufficient to motivate the bees to work harder. The colony also needs a reason to draw out comb, such as when they sense a need to accommodate more cells for brood rearing or when the volume of incoming nectar needs additional storage space. It requires a great deal of calories from nectar and honey. If existing empty comb is available, there is no need for drawing out new comb.Ĭomb is a metabolic investment. 1 Second, if the bees take the syrup, it does not guarantee they’ll build new comb. Though not personal, beekeepers have responded to this affront by adding various enticements such as scant amounts of vanilla, anise, lemongrass, even chamomile tea. First, with natural nectar available, some colonies will decline your generosity. When a colony balks at drawing out foundation, the consensus of beekeepers rallies around the advice, “You need to feed them a little sugar syrup.” I have mixed feelings about the universality of this suggestion. ![]() Then the question becomes how to fix the underlying problems that show up in the colony’s reluctance to draw comb. If the colony isn’t healthy or feeling optimistic about its future, the bees won’t be in the mood to invest the time and energy into expanding. When comb building is lacking, I can usually find one or more of these conditions are likewise lacking. These are the dots that line themselves up and comb building is simply not an issue. When the colony is firing away on all cylinders, beekeeping is quite enjoyable and almost effortless. in an area where the likelihood of encountering pesticides and pollutants is minimized.foraging on a diverse mixture of floral sources with a generous nectar flow,.the strong colonies with a robust population of bees,.My most productive hives that give me the least amount of grief are: I’ve found a rather elusive set of five, highly inter-related and intra-connected circumstances in which problems and challenges can be greatly minimized, irrespective of one’s experience. On occasion, there are some colonies where the conditions line up and everything falls neatly into place. It tells me something is not quite right, otherwise the bees would be hustling around filling in every nook and cranny with comb. In some respects, a colony’s unwillingness to draw out comb becomes a diagnostic tool. While the lack of comb drawing activity frustrates me, I find the need to revisit the basics of honey bee biology and contemplate what bees do and why they do it, as well as why they won’t. In these cases, I typically fall back to my default response and ponder what message the bees are trying to convey, often with the grand illusion that I’m sharp enough to pay attention to their signals. I thought my logic was sound and the opportunity to expand was mutually agreeable, but instead they opted to swarm, or in some cases, malinger in a stubborn malaise of indifference. There have been more than a few times my bees refused to accept my gracious invitation to draw out frames of brand new foundation. It also allows the colony to organize the resources for maximum efficiency, at least until we open the hive and start moving frames around. Comb is used for raising brood, curing nectar into honey, and storing honey and pollen. The comb is the residential structure that allows the bees to cluster for thermoregulation. It’s also a necessity for the survival and productivity of the colony. Producing wax and constructing the honey comb is second nature to a worker bee. ![]() "Walking across the field that housed the German 105mm howitzer battery created an eerie feeling. In 1941 the real Richard Winters had just completed a business degree, but with the war going on and the possibility of America becoming involved, he was concerned that he might begin a career only to have it interrupted by the draft and compulsory military service.
